Halloween Superstitions of Olde

• Many people used to consider that owls would dive down to eat the souls of the dying on Halloween. They believed that if you pulled your own pockets out, and left them hanging, the dying would be safe. (Good to know, especially the next time you get caught with your pockets hanging out from the dryer!)

• To ward off evil spirits on Halloween, bury all the animal bones in your front yard, or even put a picture of an animal very close to your doorway. (I'll assume they mean collected wishbones and leftovers from Thanksgiving for the burials, and your beloved pets, for the photos.)

• People used to believe you could walk around your house three times backwards before sunset on Halloween, and that would take care of all evil. (Next time you can't find the kids for dinner, remember you're keeping your family safe at the same time.)

• It has been said if a bat flies into your house on Halloween, it is a sign that ghosts or spirits are very nearer, and maybe they are in your home and let the bat in. (Living in the country, I've had bats in my house on several occasions. My friends claim they live in my own 'belfry', as well.)

• People used to believe that if bats are out early on Halloween, and they fly around playfully, then good weather is to come. (The bats in my belfry are beyond playful. I've been known to be borderline manic.)

• If a bat flies around your house three times on Halloween, death is very soon to come. (Doesn't this negate the good luck of the above?)

• It could be the spirit of a dead loved one watching you, if you watch a spider on Halloween. (And if you're watching, do so respectfully, and don't squish them!)

• Going in for what was once called a 'dumb' supper, meaning that nobody will talk while having supper, encourages the spirits to come to the table. (Well, not only is that term antiquated and not p.c., most families today with teenagers suffer from this predicatment, so it's no wonder that most teenagers appear possessed.)

• It is believed that if an unmarried girl keeps a rosemary herb and a silver sixpence under her pillow on Halloween night, it is quite likely that on that very night, she would dream of her future husband. (If you have young daughter's, check their pillows tonight and remove those sixpence.)

• It is said that if you hear someone's footsteps behind you on the Halloween night, you should not turn back because it may be a dead following you. And if you commit the mistake of looking back, it is likely that you might join the dead very soon. (You just can't win on this one. I'm staying home and wearing ear plugs.)

• People believe that if on the Halloween night, a girl carrying a lamp in her hand goes to a spring of water, she will see the reflection of her life partner in water. (This sounds dangerous to me, especially if you believe in the superstition just above, and the one following you is already dead. Sure wouldn't want him for my life partner.)

• People have a superstition that if an unmarried girl carries a broken egg in a glass and takes it to a spring of water, she will be able to catch the glimpse of not just her future husband, by mixing some spring water in the glass, but also she can see the reflection of her future kids.
(OK, this is just too much. Now we are being followed by the dead, stuck with them for life and sharing common ghouls.)

• There is the old saying that "black cats are bad luck". It was once believed that black cats were the devil, or consumed by evil spirits. (I have a black cat, she sleeps with me every night. Time for an exorcism. Now, do I exorcise her or me?)

• People used to believe that Satan was a nut-gatherer. Nuts were also used as magic charms on the day of Halloween festival. (At this point, I'm feeling nutty. I think the exorcism has to be on me.)

• If you put your clothes on inside out as well as outside walk backwards on Halloween night. At midnight you will see a witch in the sky. People used to believe witches were the devil, or that they were consumed by evil. (I've been known to do both, on a fairly consistent basis. No wonder I run into so many witchy people!)

• There is also an old saying "if the flame on your candle goes out on Halloween celebration; it gives you the meaning that you are with a ghost". (Stocking up on matches, lighters, and battery powered lanterns)

• If you ring a bell on Halloween it will frighten evil spirits away. (Ding!)

Mystery, Magic, Mayhem and Mysticism

The Lost World of Nostradamus With the absolute explosion of magical thinking, the Wizard's curtain was pulled back to reveal a torrential downpour over the watercolor illustrations of The Lost Book of Nostradamus

And there has been a rendering of the veil of illusion and allusion over all of his previous prophephies, Images and Quatrains. How synchronistically does this world line up to also give us Halloween, Samhain, All Saints Day, Day of the Dead and All Souls Day

This is definitely a month where the harmonic convergence of the mystical is aptly expressed by the closest and brightest Full Hunter's Moon of the year. And it provides us with an opportunity to dress up in disguises and participate in metaphorically altered states where we pretend to be ghosts and goblins, scarecrows and witches, black cats and vampires and at the same time, go to Festival of Lights and Hold Back the Night's and various other Harvest Festivals meant to parallel (but more safely reflect) this magical season. In ancient times, this time of rich harvests was the beginning, and not the end, of their calendar year. The Celtic celebration was the welcoming harvest of their New Year and the actual time of transition, from sundown on Samhain, (the original druidic or pagan celebration of Halloween) to sundown, the following day. This was the mysterious and magical "thin place" in the Celtic world.

This thin place was a place between-the-worlds...where deep insights could pass more easily to those who were open. In addition to mystical inspiration, the portals allowed the passing (from one world to another) of beings of wisdom, fun, and play....and hence, the beginnings of our own All Hollows Eve or Halloween. At the very heart of this burgeoning Celtic Otherworld, there was a belief in an apple tree whose fruit had magical properties.

Old sagas tell of heroes crossing the western sea to find this wondrous country, known in Ireland as Emhain Abhlach, (Evan Avlach) and in Britain, Avalon. At Samhain, the apple harvest was in, and old hearthside games, such as apple-bobbing, called apple-dookin’ in Scotland, reflected the journey across water to obtain the magic apple. Many of our ancient and unconnected cultures (the Egyptians and pre-Spanish Mexicans, for example) celebrated this thin time and all of is interconnecting mysticism as a festival know as Day of the Dead

The ancient Celtic view of time is a cyclical one. And in this framework, their this New Year's or All Hollow's Eve, represented a point outside of time. This was a state of timelessness, when the natural order of the universe dissolved back into primordial chaos, preparatory to re- establishing itself in a new order. Thus, this night, which we now called Halloween, is a night that exists outside of time and hence it may be used to view any other point in time. At no other holiday is the mystical and unknown, so likely to succeed.... as is evidenced by the magical number of hits over my own research filled posts on The Lost World of Nostradamus and his The Vaticinia Michaelis Nostradami de Futuri Christi Vicarii ad Cesarem Filium....or the Prophecies of Nostradamus. Little did I know that, sitting here in peaceful Salem, Oregon, that even I would be ripping open a seam in my own quilted fabric of time. A time when stitches might snap, ripping the fabric of reality to let in elements of chaos.

When I opened sitemeter first thing yesterday morning to discover I already had as many hits as the total of an average day, I knew the mayhem of magical thinking was sweeping me up, pulling me through the veil and into the harvest of mysteries. When the final count and reckoning began to come in, I was totally amazed by by the expressed level of interest in all that is unseen and yet to be understood. I knew that I had played with the mystical moonlight, and froliced in the fall air with swirling leaves and the gifts of apples from the center of my own harvest.

Now, all I need is a great fire festival to encourage the dimming Sun not to vanish too quickly into the darkness of winter. Time to say blessings for all that is rich and abundant in my world as the fertile harvesting of crops come in and the veil opens to usher in new symbols, meanings abundance and joy.

Nostradamus: Images and Quatrains from The Lost Book

The Lost World of Nostradamus
shown above: original portrait of Michel de Nostradame (Nostradamus) by his son Cesar

The Vaticinia Michaelis Nostradami de Futuri Christi Vicarii ad Cesarem Filium (prophecies of Michel Nostradamus on the Future Vicars of Christ (Popes) to Cesar his son), in short, Vaticinia Nostradami, (Prophesies of Nostradamus) is a collection of eighty watercolor images compiled as an illustrated codex.

A library card, filled out by Carthusian fathers, that was attached to the manuscript states that the 80 images belonged to the French seer Nostradamus (1503-1566). This card indicates that the codex was brought to Rome by Nostradamus' son César de Nostredame in order to be donated to cardinal Maffeo Barberini, who would later become Pope Urban VIII (1623-1644).

The book contains cryptic and bizarre images, and is more than 80 pages long and seems to link the prophecies of Nostradamus to unfolding events in this current earthly timeline. For example, there's one drawing (and remember these were done in the 1500's) of a tower with flying things coming at it, flames leaping from the sides and people tumbling out. Along with that photo is the famous Nostradamus' quatrain that mentions, "Earth shaking fires from the World's Center roar around New City."

As one historian says, "To a 16th century guy, our history - how we live now - is totally unrelatable." So the pictures and the quatrains would have made no sense to anyone way back then. They do now. And face it, World's Center and New City, are pretty close to the 'real' thing.

Massa and the other historians work on both dating and authenticating the book and find that while it is a 16th century manuscript, the renderings probably weren't created personally by Nostradamus because he wasn't an artist, although his son was. Nonetheless, they believe the predictions are most certainly his and are based on his prophesies.

Even more startling than the discovery of the book, though, are the warnings it contains, which were so blasphemous and frightening in their time that they may have been intentionally suppressed until now. In the Lost Book, there are images that strongly hint at future trouble for the Catholic Church, and even one image that appears to portray an assassination attempt on one of the modern era's most beloved popes.

There are other images that are said to depict World War I and II, and political movements such as Communism and Fascism. Current global conflicts are also presaged, including the rise of fundamentalism, in particular the current surge of radical Islam. And there is of course, his famous prediction of the date of the final end of this world...2012...and whether that means the physical end of the world, or just a new world enlightenment (which would create an altered state of consciousness, the end of one world and the beginning of a new.) It doesn't help, however, to know that the Mayan calendar also ends in...2012.

Whether you are open to any belief in prophecy or not, Nostradamus, has uncannily described, even predicted, many events throughout time. The fact that Pope Urban VIII, seemingly kept this document from public knowledge, has opened up a world of questions and possible explanations.

In the Preface to the Lost Book: Nostradamus tells his son, Cesar ,why he will not reveal more about important changes to come, or make the predictions more clear:
"Since governments, sects, and countries will undergo such sweeping changes, diametrically opposed to what now obtains - that were I to relate events to come, those in power now - monarchs, leaders of sects, and religions - would find these so different from their own imaginings that they would be led to condemn what later centuries will learn how to see and understand."
--Michel de Nostradame (Nostradamus)

The Quatrains Of Nostradamus:

Nostradamus completed a total of 942 quatrains which he organized into Centuries - groups of 100 quatrains (one Century only had 42 quatrains).

The rhymed quatrains of Nostradamus were written mainly in French with a bit of Italian, Greek, and Latin thrown in. He intentionally obscured the quatrains through the use of symbolism and metaphor, as well as by making changes to proper names by swapping, adding or removing letters. The obscuration is claimed to have been done to avoid his being tried as a magician.

Quatrains credited previously and again to other researchers and my own research as well. Posting below on Crystalinks site if you've never delved into anything there.

Old but including:

Just Ducky!

Today was an absolutely beautiful sunny day in Salem, Oregon. I spent lovely time basking in the sun as I pruned wild blackberries vines off of shrubbery and swept autumn leaves off of decks and driveways.

Not being much of a sports person...remember I grew up in Alaska in the territorial era and the only sport my high school even had was basketball! So, I don't follow or understand as much as I should.....about ANY sport ;)

Nevertheless, yesterday the University of Oregon Ducks won their game over USC and the Oregon State Beavers won theirs over Stanford.

So, I offer today...my quilty sports basket for a niece and nephew-in-law's first child...a little girl who was destined to be dressd in all of the appropriate U of O attire. They are avid Ducks fans, so of course I obliged with a 'Just Ducky' basket and a simple pieced flannel quilt!

My husband and I are both graduates of OSU, as is our son. But both of our girls went to, and one is still going to U of O. When it's time for the big UO and OSU civil war game (Dec. 1st this year)...it's hard to know who to cheer for. Where we went, or where our money is now.

Sorry, Oregon State...I don't have a Beaver gift basket to display...at least yet!

A Quilt Poem

A Treasure
A quilt poem by Mildred Hatfield

It's more than a coverlet,
More than a spread,
This beautiful quilt
That graces my bed.

It's laughter and sorrow,
It's pleasure and pain,
It's small bits and pieces
Of sunshine and rain.

It's a bright panorama
Of scraps of my life-
It's moments of glory,
It's moments of strife.

It's a story I cherish
Of days that have been,
It's a door I can open
To live them again.

Yes, it's more than a cover,
This much-treasured quilt,
It's parts pieced together
Of the life I have built.

proof that I actually sleep under 5 quilts;
10, if my husband tosses me his share

The Lost World of Nostradamus

In a week filled with synchronicity, magical anticipation, and a glorious full moon, what can be more exciting than to open up to new understandings and the blurring of all that is finite knowledge and the world of infinite possibilities?

I start out every day with my usual cup of coffee and Ellie's World and CRYSTALINKS EZINE , a magical entrance beyond the veil...to a realm where all worlds meet. This week, Ellie Crystal is shining her intuitive spotlight on the prophecies of Nostradamus and the release of The Lost Book of Nostradamus.

Buried away for centuries, most likely by Pope Urban VIII, the book was re-discovered in 1994, by an Italian journalist, Enza Massa Roberto Pinotti in the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Roma (Central National Library) in Rome, Italy.

The author's name Michel de Notredame, was not only written on the inside, but written in indelible ink. There is evidence to suggest that it is the final work of the most famous and controversial prophet in the history of the world, Nostradamus.

Whether you are open to any belief in prophecy or not, Nostradamus, has uncannily described, even predicted, many events throughout time. The fact that Pope Urban VIII, seemingly kept this document from public knowledge, has opened up a world of questions and possible explanations.

Are the current issues like terrorism, global warming, and a resurgence of deadly disease and natural disasters, bearing witness to the last days? And if so, do other cultures and writings around the world, including the Holy Bible, arrive at a similar conclusion to what Nostradamus suggests?

As the creator and write of Ellie's World, an online mega-empire, known as Crystalinks, Ellie is not only giving a workshop on the subject of this discovery in New York City but is part of a panel participating in the History Channels special on the Lost Book of Nostradamus.

Nostradamus: Strange and Unusual Facts

The Lost World of Nostradamus
—Nostradamus predicted the world would end in 2012 in one interpretation of a quatrain, matching that of the Mayan Calendar's ending; but that it will end in 3797, in another. Hence, the discreptancy that several have noticed and commented on. Let us all, in this era, hope that its the latter, and not the former ;)

—In 1555, he published a book of recipes for cosmetics, perfumes and fruit preservatives.

—Nostradamus treated plague victims with pills he made from rose petals. He supposedly instructed his patients to keep the pills under their tongues at all times. He also claimed that the rose remedy helped fight bad breath and tooth decay.

—While living in Salon in the 1550s, Nostradamus invested heavily in an ambitious canal project designed by engineer Adam de Craponne to bring an irrigation system to the arid region. The canal was a success and still stands in existence, today.

—In late 1561, Nostradamus was arrested and briefly detained for failing to obtain proper permission from the authorities to publish his 1562 almanac.

—Although Nostradamus died in the middle of 1566, his 1567 almanac was published because he actually had it all ready and prepared before his own death.

—According to legend, Nostradamus once encountered a young Franciscan monk herding pigs in Italy. To the surprise of onlookers, Nostradamus respectfully addressed the lowly monk as "Your Holiness." In 1585, years after Nostradamus died, that monk, Felice Peretti, became Pope Sixtus V.

—It is believed that Nostradamus was buried with a document containing the secrets to his prophecies. In 1700, officials in Salon decided to relocate his coffin to a more optimal location. In the process, they decided to look inside. No document was located; however, a medallion inscribed with "1700" was reportedly found around Nostradamus' skeleton, leading people to believe the prophet had correctly predicted the year his coffin would be opened.

—The house in Salon where Nostradamus lived with his second wife and their children still stands today and is open to the public as a museum. Every summer, the town holds a festival honoring its most famous former resident.

Postnotes:
