Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show: Peter and Wendy Quilts

The 2012Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show is always a visual delight of colors, textures, lines, patterns, and unusual 3D elements. And that's just the people..not the quilts !

It is one of my quilting highlights of the entire year and one I will limp, crawl, or beg a ride to, in order to attend! So, in spite of some unusual challenges, and an extremely challenging two months, I took one day ..just for myself..and headed to Sisters to see the show.

It was a beautiful and amazing day...well, until it started pouring down rain, and then we had thunder, and then a lightning show lit up the sky! First time it has rained during the quilt show in 37 years!!! Even cut short by a few hours and with viewers running from "cover to cover" ..it was still so much fun!

Held the second Saturday in July, the small town of Sisters is filled to the rafters with as many as 13,000 visitors. And every one of us is armed with a camera, a list of the quilt locations, a water bottle, and the determination to map our course and search our this amazing Never (Ending) land of creative expression in the textile arts.

One of the most delightful parts of the entire Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show was the Cover to Cover book club quilter's amazing challenge.....The "Peter and Wendy" Quilts.

'Cover to Cover' was formed in 2000 by a group of quilt artists who challenged themselves to read a specific book and creatively and thematically express that book in the creation of a quilt.

In an effort to make more interesting quilts (and be motivated to get them finished), the group acknowledges that each member may have different quilting interests and abilities, so each member brings her unique talent and her individual ideas into play and creates pieces that may range from the traditional to the free form and highly artistic art quilt.

This year, the group's work is based on "Peter Pan' by Sir James Mathew Barrie. You walk into a wonderful never never land of quilt artistry and simply allow yourself to 'Believe'!!!

Anything and everything is possible, and we can all be young forever in this magical forest of quilts.

The Portland area quilters created an amazing assortment of art quilts in that process and it was great fun seeing how even a common theme might present itself very differently to different quilters.

After two solid months of excessive challenges, and new ones seeming to arrive every day, well...all anyone can do is simply continue to ....
.

"Believe
!"

And quilts and quilting continue to bridge the drama of life, giving respite and joy. Sigh...

Isn't that just the truth! From real life to the fantasy life of all of the art and all of the quilting that I wish I was creating. But the healing acts of creation and manifesting love are just as great..just not always fanciful fun!

You bet it did, Winifred! It was a lot of walking but it got me fired up for the 32 to 42 city blocks I ended up walking from a hotel to the hospital to see my brother multiple times a day. I realized just how out of shape I was..but somehow....I always walk all of Sisters and love every hot minute of it!

Hi, Michele. Wonderful quilts in Sisters. I've always wanted to go to that show but I'm never in Oregon at the right time. It's so interesting to see the Peter and Wendy theme. I have my grandmother's quilt with Peter Pan-inspired embroideries which I am restoring and then I have a quote from Barrie's book that I'm making into a small piece. So fun!
And may God give you the strength to face each day and to help your loved ones who are in difficulty.
best from Tunisia,
